Original Birkin Handbags are manufactured by the luxury leather goods and clothing manufacturer Hermès. It is named after British-born actress and singer Jane Birkin, who in 1981 was traveling on an airplane seated next to the President of Hermès when she spilled the contents of her handbag. When the President of Hermès noticed, he offered to create a bag named after her. Costing from around £3500 they are higly desirable and used by many celebrties, the waiting list for a Birkin is over two years, although, in practice, a genuine customer can walk into an Hermès shop and purchase one if the shop manager feels that she is a legitimate buyer and not just someone trying to make a quick buck by reselling. | ||
